Summary

W oszczędnym, przejmującym stylu Hemingway pokazuje realia życia w kubańskiej wiosce i warunki pracy rybaków, jednak Stary człowiek to przede wszystkim ponadczasowa opowieść o uporze, niezłomnej sile ducha i pomysłowości pozwalającej wybrnąć z najgorszej opresji。

Classic Hemingway tale of a man and the sea。 Many years ago I visited Havana and went to Cojimar, a small town outside of Havana where Hemingway kept his fishing boat。 It was here I had the good fortune to meet Gregorio Fuentes who captained the Pilar for Heminway。 Cojimar and Fuentes were the inspiration for The Old Man and The Sea。

I thought I had read this - it has been on my bookshelf for awhile and yesterday I read another book about Hemingway and Cuba and then started thinking about my trip to Cuba a few years ago and the photos that I have from a fishing village that we visited。 That lead me to looking for this book on my shelf and wanting to read it again, or maybe for the first time。 I've been studying Hemingway lately and I haven't read very much of his work yet。 So this was a good start。 His writing was so vivid i I thought I had read this - it has been on my bookshelf for awhile and yesterday I read another book about Hemingway and Cuba and then started thinking about my trip to Cuba a few years ago and the photos that I have from a fishing village that we visited。 That lead me to looking for this book on my shelf and wanting to read it again, or maybe for the first time。 I've been studying Hemingway lately and I haven't read very much of his work yet。 So this was a good start。 His writing was so vivid in this I could picture the old man and his boat and the struggles he was having out to sea。 A short read and a definite must if you are a Hemingway fan if you haven't read it already and if you aren't a fan yet, this might get you started He did win a Pulitizer Prize in 1953 for this one。 。。。more

The first half and change of this book starts out incredibly slow but the pace seems intentional - you feel the old man’s pain, nausea, and struggle while he fights against the big fish, whom he considers his equal in many ways。 Which is why I shouldn’t have been so surprised at how emotional I got by the story’s end - I felt like I had gone through hell and back alongside the old man in the span of 127 pages。

The first half of the book really drags out and it was really challenging for me to read (it took me almost 5 months!) but metaphors aside the story itself was gripping and full of ups and downs, the detailed description of tiredness that the fisherman bore was so real and touching for me。 The only conclusion I would get out of this story is that sometimes we must accept defeat but only when we've already exhausted our best efforts。 The first half of the book really drags out and it was really challenging for me to read (it took me almost 5 months!) but metaphors aside the story itself was gripping and full of ups and downs, the detailed description of tiredness that the fisherman bore was so real and touching for me。 The only conclusion I would get out of this story is that sometimes we must accept defeat but only when we've already exhausted our best efforts。 。。。more

Beautifully written but I wanted to love it more than I did - never read when I was younger and was hoping to find it inspiring now but it was just hard for me to get into this story。 While there was good tension and I cared about the outcome, it was just more fish and sharks, and it was kind of sad and frustrating。 Def glad I read it though, it’s been on my TBR for years。

This was a great read of man versus a great fish, how Santiago battled the sharks, battled the sea。 Too bad though the great Marlin got devoured by sharks。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I read this book because it's a classic and I normally tend to enjoy the complex themes of classics。 However, The Old Man and the Sea was a very boring read and terrible when compared to other classics I've read (e。g。 Great Gatsby)。It gave me Rime of the Ancient Mariner vibes which I didn't like and seemed to drag on。 It also seemed very unrealistic for someone that old to have been out at sea for days with just a small flask of water and to have fought off over 5 sharks; and still have his skif I read this book because it's a classic and I normally tend to enjoy the complex themes of classics。 However, The Old Man and the Sea was a very boring read and terrible when compared to other classics I've read (e。g。 Great Gatsby)。It gave me Rime of the Ancient Mariner vibes which I didn't like and seemed to drag on。 It also seemed very unrealistic for someone that old to have been out at sea for days with just a small flask of water and to have fought off over 5 sharks; and still have his skiff and life intact。 I half believed he was going to die at the end from exhaustion。I understand it was trying to convey themes such as pride (his battle with the marlin), hope, strength, etc。 but I just didn't really vibe with it and in the end, his catch seemed rather pointless (other than as a boost to his own ego) since the sharks ripped most of the fish to shreds - which he thought so himself since he didn't even give it another look, left it on the beach and went home。 I also didn't particularly like reading about how he would brutally kill the animals, especially the dolphin and the female fish he had caught with the boy in the past。This is definitely not something I would re-read or recommend to anyone, save yourself the trouble。 This is also the first book I've read by Ernest Hemingway and it doesn't really give me a good first impression of him。 。。。more

Short。 Simple。 Powerful。 A battle between a man and a fish, a man and the sea, a man and his circumstances, a man and himself。 The old man grapples with what his quest means in a changing world that is leaving him behind, what victory means when it is so quickly lost, what life means when his youth is slipping away as he spends each day on the water。
